Editorial choice
Pictures on this website are drawn exclusively from the work of photographer, Brian Hunter. All are suitable for family viewing, beyond which there are no set parameters for the selection of illustration images. They may be chosen for their direct relevance to narrative, perhaps adding context and perspective or simply for interest and impact.
The array of pictures available to view and to buy includes a supporting cast of images that venture beyond the aeronautical theme. Away from the Gallery, airborne expectations blend with general-interest material to illustrate the narrative pages, perhaps with an inclination to the less obvious content on a website dedicated to aviation photography.
Style and presentation vary between Gallery images and illustrations. The immediacy and storybook potential of illustrations encourages greater use of close-up or abstract imagery, whilst enthusiasts will not be disappointed by the emphasis within the Gallery upon photographs of complete aircraft. Exploring the Gallery will also reveal a more structured approach to viewing pictures, where images are grouped under 'Aviation' or 'Beyond', then catalogued and displayed within separate areas.
Viewing illustrations
To brighten the viewing experience, illustrations feature widely across most pages, so please take time to explore this whole website,* if only for the pictures. After all, photographs are what fotohunter.com is all about.
Images used as illustrations can also be viewed singularly, larger in size, either within their native Gallery collections or from one of the 'Illustrations' collections (A&B), created specifically for illustrative material not accommodated easily within any of the themed collections. The illustration collections work like any other within the Gallery, having the same viewing, slideshow and purchasing options. Please note that Gallery collections contain only those photographs that are available both for viewing and for sale.
The Gallery is a superb medium for browsing collections, individual images or viewing a slide show, though both of the 'Illustrations' collections will contain a relatively mixed bag.
* The Stock Library is intended primarily for commercial use. It will contain much the same imagery as the Gallery but it is not as well suited to leisure viewing.
Picture quality
All images have been reduced in quality just for web presentation, affecting the clarity of some smaller illustrations in particular. This common practice enables pages to load faster but is also designed to discourage piracy. Images supplied to customers do not carry any watermarks and are produced from high-resolution master files of considerably superior quality than viewable on the website. To examine this for yourself, a selection of sample images will be available to download free of charge. Unfortunately it is not possible to extend this free offer to include sample prints. See: [Main menu: Gallery > Free Images].
Buying illustrations
The policy at fotohunter.com is that, wherever possible, all photography displayed in the public areas of this website should be available for sale. This extends to illustrations, though subject to certain limitations, which apply only to a small percentage of images.
All pictures in the Gallery (including the 'Illustrations' collections) are available to buy for personal, non-commercial use, in the full range of image size and format options.
A minority of illustrations, published here for your interest and enjoyment, may not be suited for sale as individual images and therefore have not been included in any of the Gallery collections. This could be for quality purposes (e.g. where an illustration shows detail from a much larger image), or for reasons of picture content. If an illustration is not available for sale, this will be recorded with its caption. However, reasons why, may not be given.
All photographs are sold subject to the published Terms and Conditions.
Separate conditions apply to images supplied for editorial / commercial use.
COPYRIGHT of all images will remain the exclusive property of Brian Hunter / fotohunter
Applicable to all images on this website, whether or not offered for sale.
Image proportions (cropping)
PLEASE READ THIS IMPORTANT INFORMATION BEFORE BUYING ILLUSTRATIONS
All print sizes (and file downloads) for sale from the Gallery conform to common proportions, an aspect ratio of 3:2, as used by most SLR cameras. The majority of page illustrations differ in their proportions from this popular print standard. Consequently, cropping of images will also differ. If choosing to buy a picture seen as an illustration, please be aware that the image you receive will look like the Gallery version. (The one present when selecting your purchase.) In some cases the difference could be quite pronounced. e.g. if the orientation has changed between view and portrait or the illustration is an enlarged section of an image and only the complete image is offered for sale.
Always check the Gallery version of any illustration before deciding upon buying a copy of that image. Equivalent advice also applies to Stock Library purchases.
Identifying illustrations
This section covers the provision of information on "subject matter" and "how to buy" images used specifically to illustrate narrative pages such as this.
A 'Caption Key' is used to assimilate relevant data with each of the illustrations on a page, rather than attempting to locate captions in proximity to individual pictures. The key is normally to be found at the foot of each page, though on this page, you will exceptionally find captions relating to other pages also.
The caption information for illustrations (or elements of an illustration) will normally comprise of four parts, in addition to the key.
(1) Image Reference Number: This is specific to a particular image, wherever it may be, either within the archives or on the website, not just for its use as an illustration. Ordinarily consisting of an eight-digit number, possibly with a character suffix, this remains constant and is adopted as the basic name of any digital file created from that (film or digital) original. The first four digits denote when the original photograph was taken, (YY/MM). For certain applications the file name may be appended with other data (e.g. aircraft registration). Absence of any reference number accompanying a caption would indicate that the image is not for sale.
(2) The Caption: Informative stuff of descriptive writing, perhaps revealing unseen aspects of the image. Strictly intended for the individual viewer but possibly attracting the occasional searching robot, though that's not entirely likely. However, most illustrations have an equivalent images included in Gallery and Stock Library collections, where image searches are a reality.
(3) Where to View or Buy: Identifies the collection/sub collection where the equivalent, larger, image can be found. This refers only to images contained in the Gallery. Alternatively, there is confirmation that (and possibly why) an image is not available for sale.
(4) Link to Gallery Image: Underscored Reference Numbers link to a specific image within the Gallery, whilst location links connect to the collection containing that image.
There are no links between illustrations and Stock Library images.
Searching illustration images
Directly searching the illustrations by electronic means is not possible within the framework of this website. Examining the illustrative content is a pleasure reserved for 'people visitors' to fotohunter.com.
However, most images used for illustration are also included in one or other of the Gallery photographic collection. These collections are searchable by all visitors to the website, including robots. The search facility accesses both captions and keywords assigned to Gallery images, but not the captions to illustrations themselves. Stock Library images are searchable independently.
